How to Scrap Your Old Car Legally in India

The Government of India launched the Vehicle Scrappage Policy 2021 in India with the goal of gradually eliminating unsuitable and environmentally harmful vehicles which motivates people to scrap their old cars legally in return for money. The vehicle scrappage policy allows vehicle owners to scrap their old cars in a legal manner with all the paperworks. Highlights of vehicle scrappage policy are:

  • The goal of the policy is to automate the process of disposing of cars, bikes, and other commercial vehicles that are no longer fit.
  • Old and unfit cars are scrapped in order to lower pollution levels, particularly in certain areas.
  • Owners of vehicles that choose this policy will additionally receive specific benefits.
  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) would have jurisdiction over all rules and regulations established under the policy.
  • In the upcoming years, this strategy will also open the door for people to purchase safe, technologically sophisticated, and environmentally friendly cars.

Legal Process of Vehicle Scrapping in India

The scrapping process will be done at the registered and authorised vehicle scrap companies in India so that everything is legal and under the Government of India. The steps involved in the scrapping process are:

  • When a car’s original registration expires, the owner can turn it in for scrappage at a local certified vehicle scrapping center.
  • Complete the paperwork and submit all the necessary documents as requested by the scrap centres. 
  • The car’s condition and suitability for road driving will be evaluated by the fitness test.
  • The car must be demolished if it doesn’t pass the fitness test. After that, the recycler will begin the scrappage test by disassembling each component of the vehicle individually.
  • The car’s leftover components will either be sold, recycled, or utilized again.
  • The owner of the vehicle will receive a “certificate of destruction” after the car has been completely scrapped. The car may be de-registered at the appropriate RTO with this certificate. The car owner will receive payment for the scrap value either in the form of a check or digitally.

RTO rules for car scrapping 

There are some rules from the RTO in India which ensures the reliability and legality of the car scrapping process in India so that car owners can go for scrap vehicles for sale. These rules are:

  • The owner of the vehicle must notify the relevant RTO in writing that the vehicle is being scrapped.
  • Additionally, a letterhead confirming the scrap dealer’s full address and scrap photos must be given.
  • Following the vehicle’s scrapping, the owner will need to turn in the vehicle’s original registration certificate and the VIN plate cutout.
  • The owner of the vehicle must provide an affidavit certifying that there are no outstanding traffic challans, insurance claims, or hypothecation pending on the vehicle. Additionally, it should state that there were no theft instances involving the car.
